    Hi,
I have a 2000 Tahoe, 5.3 auto push button 4WD,100k miles and the message center says " service 4WD". It has come on three times in the last 1000 miles. It goes out when the vehicle is
shut off. I have checked for codes but none were set each time the light came on. I'm sure there is a reason the light is coming on and it is sensing something, but what?
Any ideas on where to look or what might be wrong?

    Thanks,
    Rick.

    Service AWD/4WD Indicator Lamp

Illumination of the Lamp indicates a problem with the drive system.
There will probably be a Transfer Case Code set to aid in diagnostics.

The only way to get the light to go off is to clear Transfer Case codes.
This light can NOT be shut off or reset any other way.
Transfer Case codes should be read and repaired before clearing them.
Refer to Transfer Case. See: Transmission and Drivetrain\Transfer Case\Testing and Inspection

.....you need to have it scanned for transfer case codes......Jim

Like Jim said, have the T case module scanned for codes. A common failing on these was the mode switch. DTC B2725 is the code most often associated with a
    mode switch concern.

    Guys,

I must be missing something but how do scan for transfercase codes, is it any different than scanning for other codes??
I understand that it indicating a problem, like I said I had the codes checked and nothing set. That is why I'm asking if
you check for transfercase codes differently.

"Refer to Transfer Case. See: Transmission and Drivetrain\Transfer Case\Testing and Inspection" I not sure where this is
    located??

    Thanks,
    Rick.

You can not get the codes or check it with a OBD11 scanner.
You need a engine and transmission and transfer case capable scanner.
One of them high dollar high end good old boy scanners.
Like a snapon with the 3 in one cartiage or GM scanner or high end OTC scanner.
Run it by a dealer or good repair shop and the can check for codes and test it for you.

    Crunch,

That makes sense, I was using the wrong tool. I will have it scanned with the right tool.
    Thanks, for helpful information, everyone.

    Rick.
