P0401 1995 Lincoln Town Car
« on: November 01, 2009, 05:39:35 PM »
1995 Lincoln Town Car Executive, 4.6L, 184,000 miles

The Check Engine Light is on...I pulled a single code...P0401 Generic, EGR Flow Insufficient.

What are the most common things I need to check?  I'm thinking maybe the EGR port is clogged with crud...any other ideas before I get digging into this?

THANKS!!

I would check for carbon build up first, then use a vacuum gauge to make sure the egr is good, and if all  this checks good I would then suspect the DPFE sensor.

Will do...thanks!  It may be Saturday before I can get to it.

One more question...I need to replace the ignition lock cylinder.  Is this a difficult process?  Thanks again.

Well, I tried working on this today.  I never was able to unhook the exhaust riser pipe from the EGR valve; I can't get a wrench on it, or where it screws into the exhaust manifold.  Any ideas there?

I did, however, remove the throttle body, to inspect the ports from the EGR to the intake.  They were clogged completely up.  I cleaned them out both the intake and the throttle body.  Upon reassembly, I cleared the code and drove the car about 15 miles.  The light didn't come back on.  However, after the car sat for about 20 minutes, I cranked it back up, and before I backed out of the driveway, the Check Engine light came back on.

The code now is: P1401 (Ford) EGR Circ High Input.  What does this mean, and what should I check now?

Also, I replaced the ignition cylinder lock...easy-peasy fix there!

Thanks for your input!!

Did you happen to unplug the DPFE sensor while you was back there?...Could be unhooked or bad....Jim

Brilliant observation, Jim!

I did have it off, and when I plugged the harness back into it, I didn't push it in far enough for the clip to engage.  It was quite a booger to get it on all the way.

I cleared the codes, and I am driving it to work and back tomorrow; I'll repost the results.

THANKS!

Thanks, Jason and Jim; I'm calling this one fixed!

I drove it to work and back today, about a 40 mile round trip, and NO CEL!

The primary culprit was crud buildup in the groove from the EGR valve tube into the intake manifold; the groove is in both the intake and the throttle body.

The secondary culprit was me; I neglected to securely plug in the lead to the DPFE sensor during reassembly.

Now all I have to do is some brake work on Saturday, and this one will be ready to sell!

THANKS BAT!
