'96 Dakota 46RE Won't Shift Out of 1st
« on: November 29, 2008, 05:36:27 PM »
Hi guys, I need some advice.  My 1996 Dodge Dakota 4x4 won't shift out of 1st gear.  Transmission has about 40000 miles on it.  I replaced the transmission control relay, topped off the fluid level(was about a quart low), still have the same issue.  I also cleaned the battery terminals this morning, took it for a spin, was able to shift into 2nd, but only after it reached about 3000 RPM.  But it was only temporary, as it will not shift out of 1st again.  The fluid does look good, doesn't smell burnt.  I put my code scanner on it, no codes.  I'm looking for any other ideas before I pull the pan.  Thank you in advance.

Code checker does not do much for transmission problems. :ROFL
Needs a good transmission capable scanner check up.
Post back any codes.
OEM parts only hurt one time Crunch said that.
Cheap after market stuff will bite you many times. My brother in law is learning that the hard way.

Really common problem is gov. pressure solenoid & sensor. When they scan have them look at this data also and post back. Transman

Well, I have not had an opportunity to get a scan on the tranny, but I did try a few things that have almost done the trick.  I unplugged the transmission solenoid connector, cleaned it out, plugged it back in.  Took it for a drive, sometimes would shift on its own, sometimes wouldn't.  Manually shifting it got the same results.  I did replace the TV cable because I broke the plastic end off at the throttle body 5-6 months ago and made a new end for it.  Now, with the tranny in Drive, it will shift through all the gears, but shifts at 3500-4000 RPM.  Manually shifting it works good.  I'm going to dp some research to see if the TV cable is adjustable, 'cause I'm pretty sure thats all thats wrong with it now.

Yes, it is adjustable AND has to have a return spring (usually down on the tranny). Make sure the spring is there and still connected before you try adjusting the TV linkage. If you changed the actual adjustment by making the end for it (overall length is different now) then you will need to adjust to compensate for your new end. The shifting pattern should have changed at the same time you repaired the end if that is the likely problem, Transman
