1992 Dakota Truck 2WD: Power Steering too easy/soft
« on: October 06, 2008, 07:13:28 PM »
The steering in my father in-law's 1992 2WD Dodge Dakota truck is too sensitive.   It doesn't take much to turn the wheel from end to end.   There is no resistance at all.   I changed the power steering pump thinking it was just putting too much pressure, but the problem remained the same.   I have never seen this in all the years I've been working under the hood.   The only thing left is to change the rack and pinion.   I'm hoping someone has experienced this and can tell me what is causing this.   I've seem racks go bad and the end result was hard steering.   If this rack is bad, its because its an over-achiever.

Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions.   If there's a regulating valve that can be accessed/replaced easily without having to buy a new rack, that would be great.   Suggestions are welcomed!

The only thing I can suggest, compare it to another similar vehicle to make sure there is something wrong with it before you replace anything else. Although it may not be what you are use to, it may be normal for the vehicle and without seeing it in person, it would be hard for you to describe it for proper diagnostics.

Back in the 70's (?) my fathers Ford Elite <sp>, every time I drove that darn thing and in my opinion, just touched the brakes, my face would be planted on the windshield. Nothin wrong with the car or its brakes, it just had more sensitive brakes than what I was use to.

As with any (perceived) problem, make sure it is a problem before fixin it. :)

You have a loose cross-pin on the upper stub of the pinion shaft. This will let the assist valve be opened without any resistance from the torque spring inside the pinion shaft.

any questions?

Dan,

So I assume this means I should replace the rack and pinion.

You will have to replace the entire assembly if you don't have resources to repair it.

Thanks to everyone for your help.   Changed out the rack this morning, and the steering was as good as new.
