Check engine light Toyota Corolla CE Code P0171
« on: December 21, 2007, 01:12:52 PM »
Help!!

My check engine light illuminated about 2 weeks ago when my wife was driving home from work around 20min travel time.  I was in Germany at the time so she parked it in garage.  When I arrive home I made sure the gas cap was secure and drove it to see if it was a loose gas cap.  No luck there.  I then took it to AutoZone to get the OBD II code.  It scanned P0171 fuel system too lean.  I have done a TSB search and it shows TSB #05105 -- MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP ON WITH DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE P0171 OR P2195. *TT (NHTSA ID #10018290, NOVEMBER 16 2005).  Could any one give me more information that maybe more useful?  Does the Mass air flow sensor need to be replaced? Here are the details of my car

2005 Corolla CE Automatic
1ZZ-FE engine
oil changed every 5,000 miles with Mobil 1 5w-30, Fram oil filter
newer Fram air filter, and Bosch cabin filter replaced 1/2 year ago

Thanks for any help

Steve

How many miles on the vehicle? Its possible the problem is the sensor wires of the mass air flow sensor are dirty, have dirt melted on them.Im not much of a fan of Fram products, the Toyota brand filter is much better quality. If the sensor wires are dirty use a electrical part spray cleaner,CRC makes a spray chemical available at most auto parts stores.

The bulletin you mentioned invloves replacing the air/fuel sensor with a revised one.If you are under 50K miles Toyota will replace it if its found to be causing the DTC PO171.

I have just under 45K, I have used the Toyota oil filter, but I was in a hurry so I just bought the Fram.  My check engine light is no longer lit.  I wonder if I should still get it checked out.

Sure.As I said, scope out the mass air flow sensor wires. If thats ok,then let Toyota see whats going on.They will warranty the air fuel sensors if you are under 50K miles.

It's a good thing you went in with the TSB info.   Most of these service guys seldom check them.

New Update!!

Check engine light came back on.   Code P0171.   Dealership advises to replace both air intake gasket and Air/fuel sensor.   However Both test good.

The general feeling was that the air intake gasket was failing at cold temps.   below 20F.   Current temp is 38F.    Dealership wants $222.   Gasket costs around $9. 80  Could anyone send me the service procedure.   Most importantly I think I need the correct torque specs so I don't over torque the gasket.

Thanks!!!

Your problem sounds familiar.  I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla that began having problems in Jan 2007.  The problems started when the weather got cold, and the problem disappeared in the spring.  A summary of the complaints, diagnoses, and attempts at repair are summarized below.  As you will see, the dealership made a number of attempts to repair the problem.  It appeared as if the problem was solved.  However, a couple of months ago, when the weather got cold again, the problem reappeared -- Same symptoms.  I haven't taken the car in to get repaired yet, mainly because I have lost faith in this problem getting repaired correctly.  Interestingly, I noticed today a newly posted service bulletin: "M. I. L.  (ON) DTC P0171, P030# AND/OR P0133 ENGINE RUNNING LEAN IN SUBFREEZING AMBIENT TEMPERATURES", that was released last month.  I don't have access to the full service bulletin (though I would greatly appreciate if anyone could share it!), but I'm wondering if it could expain the timing of the appearance of the problem that I experienced, and if it could be relevant for the problem you are experiencing now.  Just a thought.  I would like to see what other people think about this.

Jgoodnight,

Have you had any problem after they replaced the air flow sensor?
