2006 Ford Focus ZX4 (transmission fluid change)
« on: November 04, 2007, 09:54:45 AM »
I was wondering if anyone here is familiar with this procedure? I need to get mine changed but the shop wants to charge me 100.00 to do it. I asked if this is something I could do and he said yes because all they would do is drain the old and put in new. It sounds like all a guy has to do is drop the pan, drain the fluid, install a new silicone gasket and refill the fluid up. Does this sound right? I haven't even been under the car to see where things are located so I'm not even sure if this is easy to get to / do. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

How many miles on it.
Craw under there and have a look around.

Does it have a filter in the pan to change?
If not you can change fluid witout dropping the pan.

They do not make silcone gaskets. :)
Silcone comes in a tube.
And you need some special tender loving care to install it.

OEM parts only hurt one time Crunch said that.
Cheap after market stuff will bite you many times. My brother in law is learning that the hard way.

there is 36,000 miles on it.

I'm not sure about a filter. I've been reading around but can't find anything in particular for this car. The guy at the shop didn't mention anything about the filter but who knows. He just told me they'd simply drain the old out and put new in however he did say they WOULD drop the pan. Perhaps they drop the pan to change the filter he didn't mention anything about.?

I would ask him what all he is going to do or needs to be done.

100.00 seems pretty cheap for a trans svc., the dealers here usually charge 1.5 hours labor plus fluid and sealer and waste oil fees. They will usually have them on sale for around 95-125 but that is as low as i have seen them around here. They can also do what is called a trans flush which means they hook up a machine to remove up to 95% of the fluid but do not remove the pan or replace the filter. Some mechanics don't like trans flushes others do. I rec it if you tow with your vehicle or if your fluid is changing color. I don't rec it on high milage vehicle as it may cause trans problems. The biggest thing to be aware of is the type of trans fluid they put back into your vehicle. Make sure it is the type that it calls for and not some generic universal type. HTH and good luck!! I will call them today to get some clarification.
Does it need a filter change at this time if there is indeed one in there? Does it need the machine part of it to run that fluid through there as well?

I called the guy and he said they would drain the fluid and change the filter. They would not run the machine on it unless I wanted it done.

That is not a bad deal for a 100$

Price out your parts and fluid and filter.
The difference is what you would save doing it yourself.

Good Luck either way.
