95 gmc sierra 2nd gear tranny slip?
« on: February 15, 2014, 10:58:38 AM »
how yall doing today. I have a 1995 gmc sierra k1500 350 5.7 with a 4L60 transmission. I have a lil problem with my tranny. when I put it in drive it runs fine. first gear goes good but then second gear doesn't do so well. when I hit about 35mph it revs its self. kinda like I just put it in neutral and it just revs up. but if I slam on the gas I can feel 2nd gear go back on but im already peeking 4500rpm and you can feel the gear hit and miss. and then it wont downshift. so basically im only able to go 30 and if I try to go over 30 it just slips and revs till I go back under 30-35mph. all other gears work fine. but its just second.. I was told that it was just rebuilt when I bought it witch was about 40000 ago. any ideas? thank you

 4l60 -  in a 1995?

Anyway that sounds like a 3/4 clutch pac ...might want to check the pan likely some material metal and friction,

if our trans guru stops by he will add but,   confirm 4l60 - definately try checking codes -

I tried to look for the tranny type but I couldn't find it in the owners manual. so I looked it up on Google. it might be the wrong one

get the codes they may help -  its easy -  better then my memory or searching build sheets ..

EDIT
a quick ck says a 4L60E  -  get the codes and post them - a hail mary but too simple to ignore

The trans ID is usually on the RH side of the case, towards the rear and a bit up above the pan-gasket surface.  Also, you could take a picture looking up at the pan to show us its shape; pan shape is often used to identify an auto trans type.

the 4l60 has a 'kickdown' cable from the throttle linkage to the trans - the 4L60E has no cable- again the codes will tell as some are specific to the 4L60E

ok so I got some codes. ill give u the list with the definition. 13-o2 sensor, 15-coolant temp/low temp, 37-brake switch, 54-fuel pump circuit, 81- transmission 2-3 error, 83-tcc solenoid circuit fault. now is the 81 and 83 sensor inside the transmission? would I have to drop the pan to get to it?

Code 81 is set from the computer detecting too long of shift timing i am suspecting a 3/4 clutch pack problem i would drop the pan and inspect for clutch material in it

Wow, that is a rather eclectic list of codes.  I suggest going after the other issues in parallel with checking the trans.  We have seen before where engine and trans problems cross over from one to the other.  I think the brake switch, in particular, may be an input for trans control.

yes Bill you are right if it has a bad brake switch it wont go into lock up and if it has a short in the lock up electrical it will show a bad brake switch that is what makes are job hard
