Intake manifold bolts on Ford Escape
« on: August 25, 2013, 12:14:53 AM »
I am trying to remove the intake off of my 2005 Ford Escape, 2.3 liter, 93,000 miles. I want to replace the intake gaskets, EGR  vent gasket, PCV valve, and some O rings where needed. Hello to those that know me. My problem is I have everything ready for the intake to come off except for the fact I have removed seven intake bolts but there are eight bolts. I have looked for hours for that eighth bolt. I have tried the feel only method trying to find the head of bolt. I am attaching a quick drawing of the seven bolt positions that I removed. Thanks

Your drawing does not seem to include the bolt under the throttle body mounting area.

Use a mirror to find it.  Another tool in my toolbox can't do without, a mirror.

Oh, and you better stick a bolt back in, in  hole that is easy to get at.  May have to clean and oil the threads for easy to turn by hand.  So you can hold that manifold with one hand and remove that screw with the other.  Otherwise, your intake manifold will go crashing to the floor.

Ha, learned this stuff from my mentor when I was ten years old.  Really bad if the carb is still attached to the intake manifold.  Another thing he taught me, don't take apart anything that isn't necessary.

Good idea Nick, I will do so if I find that last bolt. I used a mirror, but it was about 4" round, so not the best. I need to buy one of those extending mechanic mirrors. Anyway no luck yet. I can not find a schematic that shows all the bolt locations for the intake.

Thanks Jim. This bolt must not want to be found. Can you tell which one I am missing? I went over everything I've done so far and I see that I failed to remove the EGR tube. Does the EGR tube have to come off before the intake? Does the EGR tube hold the intake on if not removed?  Also, I still can't find that eighth bolt location. I was up until after 1:30 AM looking for it, and spent about 6 hours today. Help please before I go into "auto-shock"  :hee

Did you remove the throttle body?....from the pic it looks like you might be missing the second or third one over from the left on the bottom....Jim

Your "red x" pic does not include a likely bolt located between cyl 2 and 3, below centerline.

Looks like there would be some sort of vacuum switching valve above it.

It would be crazy if a nipple for a vacuum hose was also a bolt to hold on the manifold.

If I were trying to locate "the last fastener", I would CAREFULLY pry at one end, then the other, and try to judge to amount of "give" at either end. If the rigidity of the manifold is fairly consistent, the end with less give will be closer to the last fastener. Don't forget that I capitalized the word "carefully".

Jim and Dan thanks for the replies. Is the Blue circle on this schematic the bolt position you think I may be missing?

Yes, and the hole just to its left is another possibility.

OK, I am going to buy a good mechanics mirror and maybe make a trip to the junk yard to check out some 2.3's that I can get a good look at the intakes. If you could look at one more schematic. The Blues are possibilities. What about the Green circled one? Any chance there?

Alldata says there are three different bolt sizes. Is that helpful?

If your phone is smaller than your head, stick it down there and take some pictures.
