running in third versus overdrive

I have a 2000 s-10. When I am driving on roads that are winding or hilly, or in town, I sometimes drop the transmission to third gear.
The truck performs much better since it has a four cylinder. Question- Does doing this wear the transmission in any way. How fast before it could hurt.
