The 4.8L is not a diesel engine, it a gas engine,, if it was a diesel it would be a 5.2L turbo.
If it is a NPR, 2003, the tranny should be a 4L80-E, & use dextron III,  fill capacity are 13.5 quarts after a rebuilt, & 7.7 quarts after a pan drop.

It is a turbo Diesel, its a Chevy C4500 chassis, with a Isuzu NPR drivetrain
it might be a Allison trans it does have a drain plug, your sure it takes dextron 3?
there seems to be a external spin on tranny filter?
but yes it is a turbo diesel for sure 4 cylinder
how many quarts of oil does it hold we have alldata but it does not give me fluid information
thanks

Those Cie change bed so often, it's impossible to know where they sleeping!!!  Chevy C4500 should be a Kodiac (conventional cab),    Isuzu NPR should be tilt cab, (if sold under chevy banner=W4,5,(6?))   Isuzu engine 4BD1T,  4BD2T,   4HF1, 4HF1-2, 4HE1-T, 4HE1-TC, 4HG1, 4HG1T, 4HK1-TC(5.2L turbo diesel)     The 4HE1 came primarily fitted with Aisin AW450-43LE 4-speed automatic transmissions (4th was O.D.) The early 195 hp versions of the 4HK1 also were fitted with the AW450 transmissions while the latter 205 hp versions came with the Aisin A465 6-speed automatics.
Sure it's not Allison tranny,  more Aisin, could not find the spec for the oil in Aisin but as I remember it Dextron.  The W4 with the 5.7L Vortec engine came with the TH400.

Here new find about those NPR
The break years are approximate. Some engine changes may have occurred mid year. THESE SPECS ARE FOR THE US MARKET.

4BD1T 1986 - 1991 116 HP w/manual transmission, 121 HP w/automatic These were 3.9 Liter 2-valves per cylinder, in-block cam, DI turbocharged. Essentially, all mechanical IP.

4BD2T 1992 -1998 135 HP w/automatic transmission. These were 3.9 liter 2-valves per cylinder, in-block cam, IDI, turbocharged AND intercooled. Essentially all mechanical IP with ECU to speed up engine warmup, limit fueling when hot. provide staged glow plug operation and other misc enhancements. These will run fine without the ecu.

The 4BD1T and the 4BD2T both share the same transmission bolt patern and the most common transmission in the US was the JR403E, a 4-speed automatic with 4th being overdrive. These transmissions are electronically-controlled. The manual transmission, which was less common, especially with the latter 4BD2T's was the 5-speed MSA-5D. 5th gear was 1:1, no overdrive.

4HE1TC 1998 - 2005 175 HP w/automatic transmission. These were a totally different engine that the 4BDx series. These were 4.75 liter, 2-valves per cylinder, overhead cam, DI, turbocharged and intercooled. Essentially a mechanical IP simillar to the 4BDx series but with an ECU that had some addition functions like additional timing advance, control of some throttle valves primarily intended to improve drivability and minimize emissions. THESE WILL START AND RUN WITHOUT THE ECU. In fact, once warm, I couldn't tell any difference in performance with or without the ECU.

4HK1TC 2006 - 2007 195 HP w/automatic transmission. These were 5.2 liter; 4-valves per cylinder, overhead cam, DI turbocharged and intercooled. Injection was a fuel rail setup with integral ECU. These will not run without the ECU as it fully controls the injectors.

The 4HE1TC and 4HK1TC both share the same transmission bolt pattern. The most common transmission was the Aisin AW450, an electronically-controlled 4-speed with 4th being overdrive. The engine-to-transmission bolt pattern is totally different than the 4BDx series so transmissions are not directly interchangeble.

4HK1TC 2008 and on. Same engine as before but HP bumped up to 205 HP. These came with the "afterburner" particulate filter and a VNT turbo. These also have a much more elaborate plumbing for the egr. Also, the AW450 was replaced with an Aisin A465, a 6-speed electronically-controlled automatic with both 5th and 6th gears being overdrive. In the Dodge world, this transmission is known as an AS68RC.
